Breaking News: Jon Scott to Run for … United States Congress!

In what may be the best orchestrated mass media duping (for lack of a better term) since at least Friday — when Barack and Hillary met in an undisclosed location somewhere in Virginia; leaving their press entourages angry and guessing — we’ve actually managed to successfully conduct our own local GOP version here in Rhode Island!

It has been commonly thought by local journalists and within the blogosphere (and by Sen. Reed’s campaign) that Jon Scott, who was a last minute candidate against Patrick Kennedy in 2006, would run in 2008 against Jack Reed for US Senate.

Although planning for a 2008 run has been in the works throughout the last two years, several months ago (ironically enough, on April Fools’ Day), Jon Scott took the formal step of forming an Exploratory Committee to investigate a possible run against Sen. Jack Reed and to start his national fundraising drive. However, during the course of said “exploration,” Jon came to a realization that his initial goal from 2006 remained unfinished, and frankly, would be more attainable given any number reasons (which I’m sure he will cover in some detail on Monday night).

Therefore, the specifics known only to a small handful of people, Jon decided to gear up for a follow-up run for United States Congress (District 1), against Rep. Patrick “Patches” Kennedy. He is planning a very serious campaign which we are pleased to know will catch many completely off guard (esp. Patches). On Sunday afternoon, Jon received the overwhelming endorsement of the Rhode Island Republican Party Nominating Committee (of which I am a member) for his candidacy for United States House of Representatives. The RIGOP State Central Committee as a whole will vote on that endorsement at its state convention on Thursday evening.

Jon, who lives in Providence, will be making his formal announcement of candidacy for US Congress towards the beginning of the Providence Republican Party meeting on Monday night at 7:00 P.M. in the Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway, in Providence. He will publicly announce his candidacy for US Congress, in front of all the TV cameras and local news media. The media were planning on attending anyways, but we know that they didn’t see this coming! It certainly provides for a better story!

Join us, and be part of this excitement. You will also hear from other statewide candidates, and will meet the many Providence candidates for State Legislature.

PS There will be a GOP candidate for US Senate, but I can’t mention his name yet. :)
